Toyota has sold tens of millions of Corollas over the years, and for a good reason: The cars are the benchmark for value, reliability, and functionality and have continued improving with every new model year. Toyota updates the Corolla for 2023 with a more powerful 4-cylinder engine, a new infotainment display, and massaged styling front and rear. Thanks to a new hybrid system with a rear-mounted electric motor, the car also gets all-wheel drive (AWD) for the first time.

The 2023 Corolla rides on Toyota’s new global platform, which the automaker says gives it better rigidity and a lower center of gravity. Toyota focused on noise levels and comfort in the car and says it added sound-insulation materials to keep the cabin quiet and serene.

Toyota will continue to offer the Corolla as a sedan and hatchback for 2023, the latter body style gaining a new performance trim level. The GR Corolla features a rally-inspired AWD system, manual transmission, and unique bodywork.

All new Corollas get refreshed styling for 2023, including a new front fascia and standard LED daytime running lights. While the LE trim receives a new rear bumper, SE and XSE trims come with a new diffuser and 18-inch wheels. The SE, XSE, and XLE trims add standard LED headlights.

The Corolla Hatchback comes with chrome accents on the grille and updated LED headlights. Toyota updates the car’s rear bumper with chrome accents and body-color paint. New color options include Blue Crush and Inferno.

Though the Corolla’s exterior looks new, its cabin should remain relatively unchanged from prior model years. That means standard fabric upholstery with manual seat adjustments, a 60/40 folding rear seat, and a practical design throughout. Toyota builds the Corolla with good room across both rows of seating, but the hatchback falls short on headroom in the second row.

The Corolla features contrasting materials inside, with high-gloss surfaces meeting matte components. Silver accents and piano black appear throughout, and Toyota offers three interior color choices, depending on the trim and configuration. Ambient interior lighting is available, and the car offers terraced cupholders to secure different beverage sizes.

Though Toyota’s now on board with the electric revolution and has its own line of new electric vehicles, the automaker long focused on hybrid tech and alternative fuels instead. As a result of that direction, Toyota’s hybrids are among the best in the business, and the new Corolla picks up more power for 2023. The Corolla Hybrid comes with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motor generators.

The standard gas-powered Corolla gets a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower. It replaces a 1.8-liter unit from previous years and improves the Corolla’s zero-to-60-mph time by a full two seconds, Toyota says. At the same time, the engine is more efficient than its predecessor, with fuel economy of up to 40 mpg highway and 34 mpg combined, according to the EPA.

The gas car’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) offers a unique “gear” function that simulates a traditional first gear. The feature remains active during takeoff and then “hands off” to the CVT. Toyota says it improves driving feel and engagement. The CVT also offers paddle shifters, even though it has no gears and is not particularly sporty.

The Corolla’s safety equipment gets an upgrade for 2023 with Toyota’s latest Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced driving assistance systems. Toyota also offers front and rear parking assistance with automatic braking. An adaptive front lighting system gives the car broader light coverage and moves with the driver’s steering inputs.

Toyota updates the Corolla’s infotainment system for 2023 with a new standard 8-inch touchscreen that offers over-the-air updates, connected apps, and a cloud-based navigation system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the new interface comes with a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple Music and Amazon Music apps, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and USB inputs.

The Corolla SE, XSE, and XLE are available with an 800-watt JBL sound system, and every 2023 Corolla comes with connected apps that include a safety connect function and automatic collision notifications.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla competes with the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, and Nissan Sentra.
